The Fish Doctor
“Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment.”
- My old Chief Resident
I’m certainly no expert, but I am experienced, and my years of medicine, military service, and fly-fishing seem to have run together so that each sphere of my life has thoroughly colored the others.
Along the way I’ve picked up some stories. I’ve also learned a few things which, to my surprise, have helped those I’ve shared them with. I’d thought everybody else already knew. These are the stories of my quest for judgment. And trout. And anything else willing to take a fly.

The Doctor's Latest Fish Tale
Mother's Day in the Stream
As May begins in my New England town, big lake rainbows join the salmon in the lake near my home. One year come that that time, a chance encounter with a flying neighbor put one of those salmon on the line. I hadn't picked a name for my new fly by the time I told my oldest boy the story. Back home, I told the tale to my youngest boy. "That's obvious, Dad," he said. " It's the Mother's Day fly."
