Dear Dad,
A few weeks ago we were enjoying Jack's graduation dinner and discussing hobbies. I started to think about how many pictures of streams and fish and adventures had lit up my inbox in recent months; and I thought about how many times throughout my childhood a neighbor, friend, colleague or patient had shown up in our kitchen seeking your advice. What do you think about this whizbang I'm thinking about buying? What do you think I should do about this thingermajig? Is this the right whosit for this kind of whatsit? People always seem to be drawn to your hearth, and I've always suspected that they're seeking more than just advice on hobbies. They are seeking your perspective on how to be. How to be a good sportsman. How to be a good business owner, citizen, father. How to approach problems much bigger than the whatsit that prompted the visit. A "Hey Doc", a trip down to the workbench, and a few cigars later, and things would be looking just a little bit brighter for that neighbor, friend, colleague, or patient.
During that dinner, as I watched your phone buzz (oh that's just So-and-So telling me about Such-and-Such), an idea came to life. You find yourself in a new, challenging, and -- judging by the Pecos River LiveStream direct messaging updates -- possibly even fun time in your career. Recent years have taken you farther afield than you expected, demanding you to be patient with the changing tides. But they have also brought their gifts- new streams to wade, new vistas to capture, new wisdom to share about the search for Mr Trout. I think that's more than just a silver lining. I think it's a clue. A clue about where you could go next. Because while some things might be uncertain, some things are still there. Mr Trout is still waiting to be caught, and friends are still wanting your advice on how to get him. The world needs the Fish Doctor, and now when the world comes to look for him they'll find that the Fish Doctor Is In.
Happy Father's Day Daddy!
Love, Pinker
