What to stock

There are a few items that I always like to have at my workbench, regardless of the season. They always seem to come in handy.

Deer fur

I always keep the pelts of a deer or two on hand. It's as useful as it is fun to collect, if you take my meaning. The hair of the white-tail and northern deer are particularly useful for tying flies. You can use it approximate a variety of different wings, antennae, and other bug bits.

Rock Island Rooster Feathers

Once it's crowed its last, this fowl makes a great addition to the fly-fisher's collection. The two-tone feathers are useful for replication the color and shape of a many segmented insects.

Their grizzly hackle feathers are especially fly-friendly. Their black-and-white barred coloring give a nice mottled, sparkly effect when wound.

Wild Turkey Feathers

Feathers of various kinds are, of course, an indispensable part of any fly-fisher's gear collection. I find turkey feathers particularly useful. They can't be beat when you're crafting a fly to have the proper loft and reach when you cast. (Or maybe I just love using one tasty game animal to help me catch a different one.)
