Indication

Mid-summer fly fishing for trout in moving water

Instructions

  1. Use a dry-fly hook, size 16-24, and black thread.

  2. Dub a thin coat of deer fur on the thread, and wind to make the abdomen.

  3. Wind thread on the shank forward a little; you want to have an obvious waist.

  4. On the waist wind a couple of turns of black or very dark hackle. Then dub on a shorter, smaller head and whip finish.

  5. Try to do it more neatly than I did.

Doctor's notes

Like the foam ant, this fly imitates an unfortunate ant who has fallen in Mr Trout's stream. It's a good fly for after the mayflies have hatched, and the trout have switched to beetles, ants, etc.
